Hey Don,

Got your message yesterday. I meant to contact you earlier….the drums sound GREAT! They are really huge now, and everything is improved, especially the snare (which I guess needed the most work). I do like the kick drum as is, without the hole. It’s a nice contrast from my Rogers kick which does have a hole. Overall, great job! At some point I may throw my Rogers kit your way and do that one up as well…

thanks! Stephan Bayley

I was looking for a sound that was different from the number of ‘factory’ snare drums I was accustomed to playing and found it in a Portland Drum Company custom snare. Given a variety of shells to select from, I chose a 6.5″ x 14″ one ply solid shell ash drum with reinforcing rings. I enjoyed the option of being able to select from the wide array of hardware that the company offered as well. With the chrome tube lugs, triple flanged 10-lug hoops and simple but sturdy throw-off and butt this drum looks great and sounds great!

Thanks to DonShultz and the Portland Drum Co. I LOVE THIS DRUM!!

Sincerely,

Steve Driver

I came to Portland Drum Company to restore the original bearing edge profile to a 60s vintage Ludwig drum. The drum had sustained some damage to the edges so there was a very small tolerance for error. After our initial consultation, the drum came back with the edges flawlessly recut to match the original profile. Don Shultz is the consummate craftsman.

This cherry wood snare that Don has built for me has many different properties of sound possibilities presented to me each time I play it.

It tunes high for a nice controlled pop that will propel a band through a funk or rock set. I tune it lower, and it gets jazzy like a bigger drum played by Art Blakey, or a wide-open Max Roach thing. I can get really trashy with it, if needed. A very wide tonal range is presented to me when I sit in front of it.

The Trick pivoting snare strainer release lever is a nice touch, as well as the S-Hoop drum hoop on the batter side gives it some more volume and tonal possibilities.

All in all, a very versatile drum to play, and it makes me want to clear out those snares that basically are duplicates of my Portland Drum.

thanks and am looking forward to figuring out which is my next Portland drum.

Don at Portland Drum Company is nothing short of a professional. Not only is he very friendly and patient, he does excellent work.

I had an old Rogers 10×14 tom with very bad bearing edges and he restored them perfectly and brought new life to an old drum. He was also kind enough to take the time and show me some of his custom work as well as answer all of my questions.

If you are in the market for a new snare drum or drum kit and cannot find the shell pack of your liking, then look no further than Portland Drum Company for a sound investment.
